What is Graphic Design?

If you ask five people in a room to define graphic design, you would probably get five different definitions.  The correct definition according to Wikipedia is the process of carefully selecting and classifying words, images and messages into a form that communicates and influences its audience. Further, it is a creative process referring to a number of artistic and professional disciplines that concentrate on visual communication and presentation.  Various methods are used to create and combine words, symbols and images to form a visual representation of ideas and messages.  Graphic design often refers to both the process of (designing) by which the communication is created and the products (design) are generated.  The end result should be to produce a desirable impact. What is Design?

According to Wikipedia, “No generally-accepted definition of ‘design’ exists and the term has different connotations in different fields.” However, it is a fact that design links creativity with innovation and necessitates research, thought, aesthetics, function, economics and social aspects.  There’s no denying that design shapes ideas and converts them into practical and attractive propositions. It’s evident all around us.  What though merits a good design? In my opinion a good design is when the look of something is combined perfectly with its function.

So why design?

  • Design is recognised as key to good business ethics.
  • Design is good for a business to help sustain a competitive edge in the economic market.
  • A positive link is recognised between investment in design and profitability.

All designers have individual talents and different methods of approach but there are some general commonalities to all designers which determine how the design process of thinking and possibilities become distinct objectives.  The process involves: discovery, definition, development and delivery.
